Compare apartments by real cost, not the headline rent
Two apartments can advertise the same rent while producing very different monthly bills. Mandatory technology, amenity, trash, package, pest-control, parking or administrative fees can materially change the real cost.
What to include
- Required monthly fees that appear every month or billing cycle.
- Mandatory one-time charges you want to spread across the lease term.
- Estimated mandatory utility administration charges if they are fixed and you want them included.
What not to treat as a fee automatically
A refundable security deposit is money held as security rather than ordinary rent, so this calculator excludes it by default. Usage-based electricity, gas or water also may be better compared separately because actual consumption varies.
